South Sea Island

My first real day in Fiji, I spent unsure of what to do. After all, I had some cash, but my credit card and ATM card was wonky. After much debate, and some boredom, I decided to do a half day tour. I was told to try and go to South Sea Island. Lunch was included. So I caught a bus to Port Denarau, which is really really weird. Waited. Got on a catamaran stuffed with people bound for one of the many island resorts or places that comprise FIji or going home to another island. I sat next to young English guy who just graduated from school in International business. He was traveling the world, spending money and then he would find a job, work, then move on. Nice guy. Pasty white. No sun screen. He planned on being in Fiji for a month. I didn’t think being in Fiji with no sun screen and perhaps 1/100th the amount of melanin that I have was a wise thing so I lent him some sunscreen.

We did a catamaran to boat transfer which I thought would drive a US company into hysteria with thoughts of litigation and then I was on the island. A small place. The food was OK. I was worried about the cole slaw. Mayonnaise out in the sun. Great idea. It was nice. Felt like Gilligan except there was more people almost all tourists.

I wanted to go on the submarine to check things out under the sea, but I had an ear infection so that was shot. So was going under the water. I had no idea what to do, really.

Heading back a storm was brewing. Huge thunderstorm. Then it was wait in the bus. Seriously. For like an hour. I was actually fairly patient. I was on island time. It took me an hour and a half to get back to the hotel…
