The Weka

I was having a chat with someone at the conference in Shanty Town and I saw something wandering about out of the corner of my eye. I got excited thinking it was perhaps a kiwi since I could tell it was a flightless bird. It was a Weka (Gallirallus australis). It is in fact flightess and seemed to be quite approachable but he did have a kind of angry eye he'd give me.

Further in Shanty Town there was a family of weka. The chicks had hatched only about 6 weeks ago. These did not shy away from people and came quite close to me.
