Every so often, work takes me someplace special. I was able to go into Waikāne this week into an area that hopefully will be restored with native plants. This will be a daunting challenge; few attempts at habitat restoration in low lands have been successful. Still, I got to drive off-road on muddy roads and ford streams. I also got to hike into the forest. Some of the views were spectacular— and sad. With breathtaking views of Kāne‘ohe, it was sad to note that so many trees from that view were Albizia, an invasive species that shades out natives. Not matter how you cut it, however, the place is spectacular and I hope the work in restoring this special place goes well.
