The Changing of the Grill

IMG 1996

For most fo my life, I have used a kamado to grill, one that is far older than me. We actually had two, but time has not been kind to them, especially weather. The interior cracked. The exterior had some serious issues and maybe a year and a half ago, I had to do some salvage operations, taking parts from one and combining them with parts from another kamado. Last month was the beginning of the end. Huge pieces of the firebox broke. I could no longer effectively control the temperature. I have cooked almost everything in the kamado. Not just the normal grill items, but I have smoked, roasted chickens and turkeys, more orless steamed foods, pizza, bread, even a dessert was made in these old kamados.

For my birthday, I got a Big Green Egg and I finally had a chance to christen it. Having a thermomter was nice, but there’s a part of my that likes to just cook by the feel of things and keep it all natural. It did cook a lot faster but now, the thing requires me to stand and cook. I can’t hang in front of the kamado. I also forgot to take pictures of the meal I cooked: two steaks, me-so chicken, and grilled vegetables. I would have taken twice as long to cook all that food with the old kamado.

I’m looking forward to more grilling fun.
