I found this female carpenter bee buzzing around looking for a place to start a nest. She kept probing the wood, looking for some soft spot to begun using her powerful jaws to carve out a place. Carpenter bees like softer wood, usually wood that is decaying and will dig tunnels for just a few individuals. You can easily identify the females as they are black and the males are gold. In Hawai‘i, carpenter bees are often times mistakenly called bumblebees.
